Artist Statement

Both Directions at Once

“Both Directions at Once,” is a culminating exhibition of work created as a recipient of The Kala Fellowship Award, an international competition open to artists from the U.S. and abroad, and the corresponding time as an Artist in Residence at The Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California in 2018.

The works created during this artist residency were the beginning of introducing screen printing and printmaking processes directly into the paintings.

Our life is influenced by illusion and delusion. We experience many things in everyday life and create our own interpretations to form both personal and community identities. This process goes in both directions: on one level each person creates their own personality, yet, once the communal standard is established, that creates labels for a person to embrace, defy, or something in between.
